The State of Quintana Roo, one of Mexico’s top tourism producers encompassing 11 world-renowned destinations, including Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Holbox, and Tulum, today announced the launch of the Quintana Roo Tourism Board. The entity will manage the brands that make up the State’s tourism sector creating a unified promotional strategy for Quintana Roo’s product and strengthening the unique attributes of the Mexican Caribbean region.
The new Tourism Board will be lead by tourism veteran, Darío Flota Ocampo. Flota assumes the position of Director with a substantial background in tourism and knowledge of the 11 destinations that make up the State of Quintana Roo. Formerly, he was the director of the Riviera Maya and Cozumel Tourism Boards for more than seven years and director of La Salle Cancun University’s Institute of Tourism Investigations for over a decade.
“While each destination will maintain its unique identity, the role of the new Quintana Roo Tourism Board will be to showcase the strengths of the State as a whole while highlighting all the different components that make it one of Mexico’s most sought-after vacation spots,” said Flota Ocampo. “In addition, we will be launching a strategic marketing, advertising, and public relations campaign in the US to help promote the natural beauty, history, eco-adventure and off-the-beaten-path experiences of Quintana Roo to both leisure and business travelers alike.”
Quintana Roo is experiencing a period of growth with approximately 4,000 hotel new rooms anticipated in 2018. The destinations also continue to receive numerous international congresses, weddings, groups and incentive travel. Over 16.9 million visitors traveled to Cancun and Riviera Maya in 2017, an increase of 5.3 percent from 2016. The destinations expect to end the year with an additional 4 million national and international tourists.
Quintana Roo is a Mexican state on the Yucatán Peninsula. On its Caribbean coast, the town of Tulum offers seaside Mayan ruins, sandy beaches and undersea caverns. To the northeast, the resort city of Cancún is known for its nightlife, Nichupté Lagoon nature reserve and long beaches with coral reefs. Off Cancún’s coast, the tiny, reef-fringed island of Isla Mujeres has nature trails and beachfront restaurants.
